{"id":28,"date":"2015-11-18T01:28:38","date_gmt":"2015-11-18T01:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwinnettquiltersguild.org\/?page_id=28"},"modified":"2015-11-28T01:35:25","modified_gmt":"2015-11-28T01:35:25","slug":"quilts-of-valor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gwinnettquiltersguild.org\/?page_id=28","title":{"rendered":"Quilts of Valor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Quilts of Valor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Gwinnett Quilters\u2019 Guild, participates in the national Quilts of Valor Foundation which creates wartime quilts called Quilts of Valor, for wounded service men, women and veterans.\u00a0 This is our national outreach project.<\/p>\n<p>The Quilts of Valor Foundation has presented more than 68,000 quilts as of June, 2012 to service members and veterans who have been touch by war.<\/p>\n<p>Guild members and guests can help in several ways:<\/p>\n<p>Sew with our group each month.\u00a0 We meet on the third Thursday of each month at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Lawrenceville, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Make and donate a patriotic quilt or quilt top.\u00a0 Guild members who are long arm quilters have volunteered to machine quilt the tops others have pieced.<\/p>\n<p>Donate batting or fabric for backing, or help raise funds to provide supplies for our Quilts of Valor quilters.<\/p>\n<p>Each month the completed quilts are photographed and then sent to various destinations for distribution.\u00a0 Over the past two years our quilts have been sent to Kandahar, Afghanistan, Bethesda Naval Hospital, Walter Reed Army Hospital, Dover AFB, Ft. Sam Houston, TX, Camp LeJeune, NC, as well as Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are the guidelines for pieced quilt tops. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>What is the size of a QOV?<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The minimum size for a Quilt of Valor is 55\u201d by 65\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The maximum size for a Quilt of Valor is 72\u201d by 90\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>ideal size<\/strong> for a Quilt of Valor is 60\u201d by 70\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>What are the responsibilities of a Quilt Topper? <\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use good, quality fabrics of 100 percent quilting cotton<\/li>\n<li>Pre-wash all fabrics<\/li>\n<li>Use a uniform seam width (normally \u00bc inch)<\/li>\n<li>Press carefully<\/li>\n<li>Prewash your completed quilt before turning it in to the Gwinnett Quilts of Valor Quilters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>What happens to the completed quilt? <\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We photograph each of the quilts.<\/li>\n<li>We make a label for each quilt with name of the quilt topper, the machine quilter, the name of the quilt, the date completed, and the location.
