Quilting Negative Space

You’ve finished your modern quilt top that includes plenty of wide-open negative space! Now what? It can be intimidating to tackle quilting in the background areas, but this lecture will give you lots of ideas, from simple to complex, to help enhance your negative space and help you choose the perfect quilting design for your project.

Workshop January 21, 2026

Rainbow Sun

This mini quilt from her book, The Quilter’s Negative Space Handbook, combines improvisational piecing and paper piecing in a project designed to use your small scraps. We will begin with improvisational piecing, creating new fabric from collection of old favorites, then we’ll use our improvisationally pieced sections to paper piece the modified Mariner’s Compass block that forms the center of this fun little wall hanging.

Kit Fee: $25 Includes a copy of The Quilter’s Negative Space Handbook and all templates needed for the quilt.

Workshop Fee: $37.50 for GQG members $47.50 for non GQG members.

Size Matters – At Least Where Quilts are Concerned

Lecture/Trunk Show by Frances Arnold

Frances Arnold is a CPA by profession but, more importantly, a quilter for 40 years. She is descended from a long line of quilters and loves all aspects of the art, from hand applique to free-motion machine quilting. She has won many ribbons in guild and regional shows and has had five quilts displayed at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, one quilt at QuiltCon and one at American Quilt Society show in Paducah. Her favorite part of this quilting journey is the ability to encourage and inspire others to make the quilts that they want to make. She regularly writes a blog ( www.francesquilts.com/blog ) where she takes the reader along with her as she journeys along her creative path.
“SIZE MATTERS….At Least Where Quilts are Concerned”
Learn that size really does matter as we explore methods of designing quilts that fit, whether it be a bed, a lap or a wall!
